HIV Education and Prevention:
Annually MTC trains peer educators, most of whom are factory workers, to educate the community about HIV prevention and to distribute educational pamphlets. In our HIV Outreach Program we provided home visits for about 150 families who have HIV positive family members who are too ill to come to the clinic. Every year we organize a World AIDS Day campaign at MTC. Every months organize social events for people living with HIV in the community.
Adolescent Health Education:
Annually we visit local migrant schools and conduct workshops for adolescents on teen health issues, such as sex education, leadership skills, gender issues and HIV / AIDS. Adolescent reproductive health network group in migrant area have developed a training curriculum and exchange information regularly.
Migrant School Health Program:
The School Health Programme visits migrant schools twice per year to provide preventative care for Vitamin A deficiency, worm infestations, vision screening, and health education. Teachers also received training on School Health Curriculum Development, which they could teach their students.
Cross-Border Programs: Primary Health Care Clinics
Mae Tao Clinic maintains two primary health care outpatient and inpatient clinics for populations inside Burma at Pa Hite in Mutraw District (population 14,000) and Ler Per Her in Pa-an District (population 2,000) as part of the Karen Health and Welfare system. The clinics in these Karen villages serve as referral centers and inpatient facilities for the Back Pack Health Worker Teams. Terrain in this area is mountainous and harsh with a long rainy season, so malaria is particularly prevalent and is the most common health threat. Villagers in this area suffer displacement on average twice a year because of military operations.
