The Partners of Mae Tao Clinic

The success of Mae Tao Clinic is dependant upon successful collaboration with other local and international organizations, as well as the ongoing support from the international community. MTC considers the following organizations and individuals as partners in the effort to improve the lives of the people of Burma, through increased services, education, and advocacy.

Partner Organizations

Back Pack Health Worker Teams (BPHWT):
MTC partners with the BPHWT organization. There are about 75 BPHWTs. They provide health services to remote villages and IDPs in Karen, Mon, and Karenni areas. Each team consists of 3 to 4 health workers. The estimated target population for the BPHW Teams is 170,000 people inside Burma who would otherwise not have access to health care services.

Back Pack Teams are engaged in curative care, health campaigns, and water and sanitation projects, vitamin A and de-worming programs, school health promotion, and TBA (Traditional Birth Attendant) training and support. Health information systems, data collection and analysis, and ongoing medical training are important components of the Back Pack program as well.

MTC collaborates with the BPWHTs to provide health seminars, workshops, and training seminars every 6 months; BPHWTs also use MTC mobile clinics as referral centers for patients who live in close enough proximity.

Thai Government:
Mae Tao Clinic frequently refers complicated medical cases to Mae Sot Thai government hospital. Thai Public Health and Mae Sot Hospital provide advanced technical and logistical support to Mae Tal Clinic in areas such as special laboratory tests and X-ray / ultrasound facilities.

Local Organizations:
     Adolescent Reproductive Health Network (ARHN)
Mae Tao Clinic continues to work with the ARHN, a network of local organsiations based in Mae Sot including: a) Karen Women’s Organisation b) Social Action for Women c) Palaung Women’s Organsiation d) Karen Youth Organisation e) Burmese Women’s Union f) NLD Women.

The ARHN conducted a survey of adolescents in migrant, internally displaced and refugee populations. They developed training curriculum together and conduct treainings with adolescents in these target populations. Topics include gender based violence, STIs, family planning, leadership skills etc
Committee for the Protection and Promotion of Child Rights (CPPCR)
MTC continues to work with CPPCR on raising community awareness on child rights and, in particular, for the rights of documentation.
Burma Medical Association/National Health and Education Committee/Back Pack Health Workers Team
MTC collaborates with these organisations to: a. Strengthen health information systems on either side of the border b. Provide capacity building for health workers along the Burma border c. Develop training curriculum d. Develop health policy
     Burma Children’s Fund
Burma Children’s Fund supports children to be referred to Chiang Mai Hospital for lifesaving operations which are beyond the resources of Mae Sot Hospital. In 2004, around 25 cases were sent for operations from Mae Tao Clinic.
  Children On The Edge
Mae Tao Clinic and Children On The Edge work together for Child Protection in the Mae Sot area. Children On The Edge supported a collaborative research project that investigated the most urgent protection issues for migrant children in the Mae Sot area. Both of our organisations work with boarding houses for unaccompanied children to set up minimum standards of care and protection mechanisms within the boarding houses.
